Srinagar held hostage to NC interests: Mehbooba
PDP chief visits Khanyar Constituency areas
Srinagar, March 18 (VOS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti Sunday alleged that National Conference has exploited the people of the state emotionally and economically to provide luxuries and comforts to its leaders and their cronies.
“While most of the state has freed itself of that party’s negative influence Srinagar continues to be its victim which is bearing the brunt of its exploitative methods,” she said while speaking to party workers and locals during a visit to some areas around Nowhatta in Khanyar constituency.
Accompanied by party spokesperson Naeem Akhter, District organising secretary Mudasir Khan, zone president Showkat Hafiz and Sheikh Firdous Ahmed, and Jahangir Wani, the PDP chief, according to a statement, went to the interiors of Syedpora, Shuhampora, Tujgari Mohalla and Makhdoom Sahib Mohalla. She also paid obescience at the shrines of Naqashbandh Sahib (RA), Syed  Sahib (RA)  and Makhdoom  Sahib (RA).
Expressing concern at the lack of civic amenities in the areas that she visited on foot Mehbooba said the NC which had been representing the city for the last 40 years had taken the people of Srinagar far granted and “kept them deliberately preoccupied with issues that have brought only destruction to this historic city and the miseries to its residents.”
She said while the NC leadership created emotional disturbances among the people of the state and created a gulf with rest of the country “the Abdullah family and their cohort’s aligned with every body in Delhi whenever it suited them.”
“They were part of the BJP led NDA, shared power with the third front and are now ruling the state with the help of Congress. They have seized to represent the people of Jammu & Kashmir and survive in power just because they have battered away the interests of the state,” she claimed.
Mehbooba said whether it was the autonomous character of the state, its natural resources like water and power or institutions like the J&K Bank “NC gave away everything to promote the interests of its leaders and their families.”
The PDP President said the party has lost its character as a political party and has reduced it self to a power broker which is not sparing even the youth of this state. She alleged that thousands of youth continue to face police excesses and false cases at the behest of NC leaders who are running the affairs of Srinagar like a mafia.
Mehbooba, however, assured the youth who met her that she would fight for their civil liberties and any body who becomes a victim of NC excesses will find her by their side to fight their battle for justice.
She claimed that Srinagar city has stopped to grow under the NC which is in power only because Srinagar and Ganderbal give it ten MLAs in the present Assembly. “They have therefore focused themselves on promoting the interests of their cronies through illegal contracts and other benefits, JKCA Scam being the latest one. NC ruled Srinagar Municipal Corporation for five years but only added to its problems of drainage, sewerage and hygiene,” she added.
Mehbooba said the cities outside Kashmir have grown beyond recognition “but Srinagar is denied its share where people are deprived of even the small basic amenities, so that they don’t ask for  bigger development and demand account of thousands of crores that the state government claims to be spending on urban development.”
PDP president sought the support of people to fight “misgovernance and corruption” of the present government.
