Plying of water taxis in River Jhelum from
Pantha Chowk to Chattabal: Div Com
Srinagar, Mar 13 (VOS): To lessen the pressure on traffic plying on roads, Kashmir Irrigation and Flood Control Department intends to start inland water transport in River Jhelum from Pantha Chowk to Chattabal.
            This was given out at a high level meeting of officers’ chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon.
            The Chief Engineering apprised the Divisional Commissioner that Irrigation and Flood Control Department intends to engage private sector and entrepreneurs to ply water taxi having a total capacity of 18 passengers in the proposed stretch after fulfilling the pre-requisite in line with J&K Water Resource and Management Act, 2010. The operations shall be carried out from the existing Ghats for boarding and de-boarding purposes till the permanent infrastructure would be set established.
            The meeting was informed that proper printed tickets will be issued by the Department to the service providers who in turn have to ensure issuance of the same to passenger through proper ticketing counters at the terminal places.
            The meeting was told throughout the history of Mankind River Jhelum plays many roles for farmers. It is a source of irrigation, some use it as navigation and achieved such an importance that it become the life line for Kashmir people and was rightly known as the highway of Kashmir.
            The meeting was attended by District Development Commissioner, Srinagar, Mr. Baseer Ahmad Khan, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Kashmir, Mr. Ahmad Muzaffar Lanker, Superintendent Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Hameed Masood Shah, Vice Chairman, LAWDA, Mr. Irfan Yasin Shah, officers of Tourism and other line departments.
