Panchayat group calls for
anti-coalition vote in LC elections
Govt deceived us, our turn to teach
them a lesson: JKPRM
Srinagar, Nov 19 (VOS): While leaving
open the option for its members to vote in favour of PDP candidates in the
upcoming LC elections, the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Movement (JKPRM)
has asked panchs and sarpanchs to vote against the NC-Congress coalition
candidates in the elections.
“We’ve unanimously decided to
caste our votes against the candidates of NC and congress to show the coalition
government power of the voters. Coalition partners have deceived us again and
again and it is our turn to teach them a lesson”, said Convener JKPRM Shahnawaz
sultan while addressing press conference at a hotel here.
He said that the group had left open
the option, of voting for the candidates of opposition Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) or any other party, to the panchs and sarpanchs.
“Coalition partners in government have
fielded candidates which have been rejected by the people in last elections and
they have not got more than 1500 votes. The coalition government is adept at
changing colors. In morning Chief Minister says one thing and in the evening he
contradicts his earlier statement”, he added.
He said that defeating the candidates
of the NC and Congress candidates was their motive. “If the government fails to
fulfill its promises, such a campaign will be launched against the NC and
Congress during 2014 state legislative elections as well. Congress created
drama on the Panchayat empowerment issue while NC is reluctant to empower us”,
he said.
He said that issuing the notification
for BDC elections was also a part of that drama.
He said that government had insulted
the panchayat members in the society and rendered them vulnerable. “We are
having sleepless nights due to the government’s indifference. No one India is a
bigger threat to us”, he added.
He said that PDP’s proposed bill in the
autumn session of the legislative session gave PRI’s a hope of empowerment of
the Panchayat institutions. “The bill was a great hope for us but
unfortunately the bill was not introduced”, he said.
Shahnawaz said that the government was
adopting a divide and rule policy against them. “Last time we got permission
from authorities to hold a meeting of PRs in Anantnag but on the scheduled day
police had cordoned off the venue and didn’t allow us hold the meeting”, said
Sultan. “We were treated as if Geelani was going to organize the Seminar”, he
added. (VOS)
Prof Bhat welcomes Geelani’s ‘UN’
statement
Solution of K-issue, one point agenda
of Hurriyat’s Pak visit
Pakistani leaders serious over peaceful
settlement of Kashmir
Srinagar, Nov 19 (VOS): Describing
as ‘better late than never’ the statement of Chairman Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali
Geelani where he had called the United Nations a defunct organization, Muslim
Conference Chairman and Hurriyat (M) leader, Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat
said the only agenda for Hurriyat leaders’ Pakistan visit is peaceful
resolution of Kashmir issue.
“What expectation can be attached with
an institution which we think has become defunct. Kashmiri leadership must
speak in one voice for the resolution of Kashmir issue”, Bhat said while
talking to VOS.
He said if India maintained its
reluctance towards solving the Kashmir issue it would have ‘dire consequences’.
While talking to VOS after returning
from his private visit to Pakistan, Bhat said that no activity of any leader
could be personal. “I went to Pakistan on personal visit but I exchanged
opinions and views with the Pakistan leadership on India-Pakistan dialogue,
confidence building measures and the changing nature of international
politics”, said Bhat. “During my meetings with various political leaders of
Pakistan and Pakistan Administered Kashmir including Nawaz Sharief, Jaleel
Abbas, Liyaqat Baloch, Sardar Qayoom and others, I felt they’re serious about
permanent and peaceful settlement of Kashmir issue”, he added.
He said, “Politics is the game of
possibilities where an individual has to choose between destruction and
construction”.
Quoting a renowned political analyst of
America, he said, “Politics is exercising a choice between what is disastrous
and what is unpalatable”.
He said that amid changing nature of
international politics, nature of Kashmir issue has also changed and adopted a
new face.
“I see K-issue in broader
ideology. Kashmir is a dispute but Kashmiris are not the ones who are
responsible for the dispute, while as India and Pakistan are real disputers of
this issue”, said Bhat
He said that India and Pakistan cannot
come closer by entering into trade and business agreements but Kashmir
resolution is the requirement for the amicable relationship between the two
countries.
“My faith is that Kashmiri’s sacrifices
will not go waste and if it goes it will be because of our wrong policies”,
said Bhat.
On Hurriyat (M) leadership’s proposed
consultations with civil society groups ahead of their scheduled Pakistan visit
in December, he said “It was better
to initiate consultations on political basis”. However, he said that the
consultations are not meant to frame new agenda but to visit Pakistan after
taking various groups into confidence. (VOS)
PDP introduced correctives to JK
political system
Jammu Nov 19: President of
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti has said the arrival of PDP on
the scene has introduced some much needed correctives into the political system
of the state.
Addressing public meetings in Khour
Gali in Panchari area Reasi district and Krimichi in Udhampur district, the PDP
president said this had not only ended single party monopoly on power but had
promoted contest and competition in government formation which was the essence
of democracy.
Mehbooba said for nearly four decades
the National conference had enjoyed unchallenged power which had turned it into
an arrogant and thoroughly corrupt agent of exploitation. “All regions of the
state were adversely affected by its insensitive and inefficient rule but in
absence of a credible alternative the party got away with its sins. The NC
would make a mockery of governance with the confidence that whichever party
people voted for power ultimately would fall in its lap. In a way this made the
vote cast in favor of other parties valueless” Mehbooba said.
The PDP president said that her party
with its increasing appeal in all regions and a shining record of performance
as leading partner in the previous coalition with congress had established
itself as the single and best alternative to change the present corrupt and
inefficient system of governance. She said NC was for the first time in last 60
yrs facing a challenge to their unbridled power in the form of PDP and for the
first time their double speak , misgovernance and corruption was getting
exposed. She said having enjoyed absolute power for almost four decades, NC
took people for granted, looted the state of its resources and indulged in
worst kind of corruption.
Mehbooba said the party which came to
power on the plank of development, jobs to 8th pass, free electricity to poor,
50 rupee reduction on the price of cooking gas cylinder etc has done everything
contrary to those promises. On one hand, Mehbooba noted, NC has been pleading
lack of resources for paying wages to daily wagers, casual labor in different
departments, enhancing wages of SPOs, or continuation of NYC but on the other
hand the government has been making back door appointments in large numbers.
She said more than 300 people have been re employed on very highly paid posts
by the present govt after their retirement, thus paying them salary in lacs
every month. Though power tariff has gone up 4 times in the last 4 years of
this govt for everyone including BPL families, electricity has become scarce
putting people to trouble in severe summers and harsh winter.
Referring to problems of far flung
areas Mehbooba said most of the schools in places like Lander -Bamang are
without staff so students are suffering. Roads are in pathetic condition and
people are suffering due to lack of drinking water. She said Lander -Bamang
area being very far off from Udhampur needs a Tehsil of its own to take care of
their day to day problems and also a college for the girls and boys of this
vast area. Ms Mufti assured the people that their party will take up this
matters of urgent importance with the govt and also agitate for it if need
arises. She also appealed to the people to strengthen PDP as this was the only
viable and better alternative available to people. She said people have great
appreciation for the performance of PDP- Congress govt and keeping that
in mind people need to support pdp wholly if the present corrupt system has to
be uprooted , she said. She said Mufti saheb ushered in a new era of peace,
development and justice during his 3 years of rule, which the present
government has reversed in no time.
Mehbooba said the present government
has rendered all the institutions either discredited or defunct including the
latest institution of panchayat. She said the very basic purpose of taking
governance to villages has been made into a big joke and it seems these
panchayat elections were conducted only to elect four MLCs for the coalition.
Mehbooba complimented the people of the area for having elected very capable
panches and sarpanches and also assured them of full support for their
empowerment.
PDP president said that Krimchi area
has huge potential of tourism so this belt should be brought under tourism map.
She especially mentioned towards ancient Pandob temples located in this belt
which can be turned into a tourist spot. She also demanded electric supply in
local Gujjar basti.
Speaking on the occasion PDP general
secretary Thakur Balbir Singh said that people of Jammu province have all along
voted for BJP, Congress and other Jammu based parties but those parties could
never become an alternative so as to be able to end the authoritarian and
corrupt NC rule.
Shanti Devi, Partap Sharma, Sukhdev
Singh, Pritam Chand, Kuldeep Raj, Vimal Sharma, Ramesh Chander, Sarpanch Munshi
Ram, Sarpanch Kashmir Singh, Sarpanch Yashpal, Sarpanch Kailasho Devi, Sarpanch
Teerath Ram, Sarpanch Salima, Jamal Din, Raj Kumar, Bhushan Kumar and others
