Jora, Nasir inspect beautification works of river Tawi front
Directs concerned for accelerating pace of works
             JAMMU, NOVEMBER 16: Taking strong note over the slow pace of beautification works on river Tawi front adjacent to upcoming artificial lake, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora today directed concerned executing agencies and field functionaries for speeding up the pace of development works at the site to ensure its time bound completion. He warned the concerned officers against any delay in execution of projects adding that any default in this account will invoke stern action.
            The Tourism Minister was accompanied by the Minister of State for Tourism and Home, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani and Commissioner Secretary Tourism and Culture, Mr. Atal Duloo.
            The Centre has earmarked Rs. 3.80 crore for the beautification and development of river Tawi front which includes development of tourist attractions like public recreation parks, fencing on river and road sides, public conveniences, parking lots and shelter sheds cum viewpoints, besides illumination of river side.    
            While instructing to gear-up men and machinery for ensuring time bound completion of the works. Mr. Jora called for close coordination between Irrigation, Revenue, Tourism and other concerned departments for removing bottlenecks in smooth implementation of the development works.
            The Minister also directed the concerned authorities to ensure completion of developmental works of Peer-Kho temple site by this month and instructed that it should be ensured that all tourism works being carried out in Jammu division be completed well in time with assurance for use of quality material and judicious utilization of funds allocated for the purpose.
Chib reviews facilities being made available at Health institutions in Valley
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: Minister for Medical Education, Mr. R.S. Chib urged upon the medical fraternity of G.B. Panth Children Hospital to ensure better health and medicare facilities to the new born children. He said this while inspecting the various wards for ensuring cleanliness in and around the Hospital besides making available facilities to the indoor and outdoor patients.
            He was informed that G.B. Panth Children Hospital has been equipped with modern technology based Ultra Sound and other machinery for providing better facilities to the patients.
           Later, the Minister took review of the facilities being made available at Government Medical College, Srinagar and G.B. Panth Children Hospital during a joint meeting of Board Members of G.B. Panth Hospital and Faculty Members of Government Medical College, Srinagar.
            Among others, the Principal, Government Medical College, Srinagar, Dr. Rafiq Ahmad Pampori, Medical Superintendent, G.B. Panth Children Hospital, Dr. Muneer Ahmad Masoodi besides Cantonment Board Members attended the meeting.
            Mr. Chib said that medical and para-medical staff in both these Health institutions shall be strengthened besides the infrastructure would also be upgraded to facilitate the people.

Several initiatives to redesign job oriented courses: Malik   
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar organized Convocation-2012 at SKICC today. As many as 06 Doctorate, 25 Post Graduate Degrees, 02 M. Phil and 346 B. Tech candidates were awarded with the Degrees and Gold Medals.
            Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Abdul Gani Malik, Chancellor, Central University of Kashmir, Padamshree Dr. Sri Kumar Banerjee, the Chairman Board of Governors, Mr. Wajahat Habibullah and the Director, NIT, Prof. Rajat Gupta were the dignitaries present on the occasion who awarded the meritorious students with Degrees and Gold Medals.
            Earlier, Mr. Wajahat Habibullah declared the Convocation open.
            Director NIT presented Report on the activities of the Institute.
            Degree holders took the pledge on this noble occasion to discharge their duties honestly as an engineer and a scientist. The oath ceremony was conducted by Registrar, NIT, Prof. Fayaz Ahmad Mir, Secretary, Higher Education, Mr. Gazanfar Hussain was also present on the occasion.
            Vice Chancellors of Kashmir University, Central University, Islamic University of Science and Technology, intellectuals, scholars and students were present on the occasion.
            Addressing the function, Minister for Higher Education said that NIT Srinagar is the premier institution of the State and one of the best institutes of Northern India as it has contributed significantly for transformation of society. He said NIT has achieved several milestones in the field of technology.
            Referring to the expansion programme of NIT, the Minister said that State Government is ready to support in all respects for its expansion so that enrolment of students could be increased and new courses could be introduced as per requirement of the job market.
            Later, speaking on the sidelines of the function, Mr. Malik said that several initiatives have been taken to redesign job oriented courses including engineering and other scientific fields.
            The dignitaries also released student magazine “Magnit-2012”and a souvenir “Inspire”.
15th batch of 268 Hajis received at Srinagar Airport
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: As many as 268 Haj pilgrims comprising of 157 male and 111 female after performing Haj Bait-ul-Ullah returned from Saudi Arabia this morning.
            The Haj pilgrims were received at Srinagar International Airport by Director, Airport Authority of India, Executive Officer, State Haj Committee, Srinagar and district administration Budgam, besides officers of civil and police departments.
CEO ERA for expediting the construction work on drainage schemes
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: Chief Executive Officer, J&K ERA today  impressed upon engineers and contractors working on 17.6 Km Pohru Chowk-Chanapora and 12.8 Km Bemina Chowk –Fruit Mandi storm water drainage schemes to ensure the completion of work on these schemes by end of current fiscal.
            He said this while conducting the site inspection of the two drainage schemes taken up by J&K ERA under the urban component of its ongoing Multisector Project for Infrastructure Rehabilitation in J&Kfunded by Asian Development Bank.
Director Urban, J&K ERA, informed CEO that construction of drainage network of both these schemes has almost been completed and presently work on three pumping stations at Bemina, Chanapora bridge and Gulshan Nagar is underway adding that civil works component of these pumping stations is also nearing completion and installation of electromechanical equipments will be started soon.
            CEO directed engineers, contractors and consultants to speed up pace of work on both civil and electromechanical components to ensure completion of the remaining drainage schemes by end of year. 
Traffic restrictions on Bandipora-Gurez road on Nov 17, 18
            BANDIPORA, NOVEMBER 16: According to Additional District Magistrate, Bandipora, restrictions of traffic movement have been ordered on Bandipora-Gurez road as precautionary measures on November 17 and 18, 2012 in light of weather forecast issued by Metrology department. This step has been taken to safeguard life and property of the general public.
16 candidates filed nomination papers for two LC seats
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: As many as 15 candidates filed their nomination papers before Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon who is also Returning Officer for conducting the election for two seats of J&K Legislative Council from Kashmir Constituency of Panchayat quota, here today.
            Subsequently, one candidate has filed his nomination papers before Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla who is  Assistant Returning Officer for the said election.
            Prominent among the candidates who filed their nomination forms include Mr. Ghulam Nabi Monga of INC, Mr. Ali Mohammad Dar of NC, Peer Mohammad Hussain and Mr. Yasir Reshi of PDP besides eight Independent candidates and two candidates of NPP and one candidate from BJP.
            Pertinently today was the last date for submission of nomination forms while these forms shall be scrutinized on November 17, 2012. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is November 19, 2012 upto 1500 hours. The poll, if necessary, is scheduled to be held on December 03, 2012.

Power shut down
            SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 16: According to Power Controller, Power Development Department, Kashmir, in order to carry out urgent needed maintenance works, power shutdown of 132/33 KV Grid Station Bemina line shall be affected on November 18, 2012 from 09 a.m. to 05 p.m.
In another communication from the department, to carry out the remaining work for reconductoring of 11 KV feeders to facilitate RGGVY work in South Kashmir, the power supply of Receiving Stations of Dachnipora, Qaimoh, D.H. Pora, Achabal, Khiram, Dooru, Kokernag, Dailgam and Verinag Nowgam catering the feeders of Srigufwara, Redwani, Aharbal, Achabal, Thajwara, Khiram, Dooru, Vailoo to Ahlen Gadole, Sichen Sadoora, Souf and Kapran respectively, the power shutdown during the months of November, December 2012 and January 2013 on specific dates.
             In third communication from the department, in order to lay conductor on II Circuit of 132 KV Awantipora Lassipora Transmission line, power shutdown of 132 KV Awantipora Lassipora line shall be affected on November 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 2012 and December 01, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 02 p.m.
            Meanwhile, in another communication from the said department, to carry out repairs and branch cuttings, power shut of Amargarh Delina, Amargarh Wagoora, Amargarh Bandipora, Amargarh Watrigam 33 KV lines shall be affected on November 17, 18 and 19, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 05 p.m.

Farm Machinery Mela at Khansahib
Incentive of Rs. 14 Lakh to be provided to farmers
            BUDGAM, NOVEMBER 16: To apprise farmers about the latest farming technology & machinery to be adopted, “Farm Machinery Mela” was organized by the Department of Agriculture today at Khansahib.
            On this occasion Sub Divisional Magistrate Khansahib, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad said that traditional style of Agriculture should give way to modern hi-tech Agriculture to boost agriculture production. He advised farmers to take benefits from Kissan Welfare Schemes launched by Agriculture Department & coordinate with department for successful implementation of programme.
            Chief Agriculture Officer Budgam, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Parray said that to ensure sustainable production by utilization of land as per capability. Ha also emphasized that the need for protection from large scale of conversion of cultivable land to non-agriculture purposes and avoid construction of brick kilns on cultivable land. He said that key challenges confronting agriculture is to produce grains for growing population in sustainable manner.
Among others Officers & field functionaries of the department and the large number of farmers were present on the occasion. Farmers appreciated the efforts of Agriculture Department for organizing such Melas.
In the Mela authorized dealers displayed their machinery equipments & other tools Farmers of Sub Division Khansahib purchased 3 Tractors, 6 Tillers, 80 Irrigation Pump Sets, 40 Foot Sprayers & 18 Poly Green Houses, for which Rs. 14 Lakh will be provided to farmers as subsidy component.

CUK to be Centre of Excellence: Chancellor
Srinagar, Nov 16: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Chancellor and internationally acclaimed scientist, Dr. Srikumar Banerjee on Thursday strongly advocated for establishment and subsequent development of the varsity (CUK) as an institute of repute and center par excellence not only in India, but in the world.
“The Central University should provide a good platform for local youth and students from other States to become excellent professionals in order to fill the vacuum existing in different fields,” Dr. Srikumar Banerjee said while interacting with the faculty at University’s Transit Campus at Sonwar here. Dr. Srikumar Banerjee arrived here on his maiden visit on Thursday after being appointed as the Chancellor of CUK by the President of India, in his capacity as Visitor of the University.  
Dr. Banerjee has worked in several prestigious institutions and has been the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission of India (AECI). He is one of the leading experts in material Science and Technology in India and has made outstanding contributions to many materials related areas, basic as well as application oriented and has published more than 300 scientific papers in reputed international and national journals. Dr. Banerjee's has been the recipient of many awards including the prestigious Padma Shri award. Dr. Banerjee asked the faculty members, research scholars and students to give their valuable inputs about future plans and roadmap of the University. “The faculty and students should also contribute immensely towards the growth and development of the institution”.
“You should have a vision about the shaping up of this University. The University should make every possible effort to provide quality education to the students. The size of the varsity doesn’t matter. We should be more concerned about the quality education,” he added.
He suggested that the University should develop linkages with other educational institutions so that the students could get access to the knowledge base available there and “Kashmir has a distinctive architecture which should be kept in mind before finalizing the master plan of the University,” Dr. Banerjee said. He hoped that the Central University would be able to create a brand image across the globe as has done by the IITs and IIMs. “The CUs have been established on the pattern of IITs in order to provide better education to those wishing to pursue higher studies,” he said. Dr. Banerjee said that there has been a paradigm shift and India is now known as knowledge based society and that Indian diaspora is also contributing immensely towards the Indian economy.
While welcoming the Chancellor, CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid gave a brief account of the activities of the University and its future plans. He said that the varsity is presently offering ten different courses to the students who were selected through the All India level entrance examination (CUCET-2012). Prof Wahid said the University has appointed faculty after strictly following the UGC guidelines. He said the University would add more courses in coming years and the work on the campus at Ganderbal would start soon.
