State government doubles freedom fighters’ pension
Not enough, say pensioners
Srinagar, Sept 13 (VOS): The Jammu and Kashmir Government has issued orders for enhancement in the rates of pension for the state’s freedom Fighters and their dependents.
Orders to this effect have been issued by the state government vide its order number 922-GAD of 2012, a copy of which lies with VOS.
As per the order, pension in case of living freedom fighters has been enhanced to rupees
3000 per month from rupees 1500 per month.
New rates of pension for widows have been increased to Rs 1800 per month, who were being paid at the rate of rupees 900 per month, previously.
Similarly, the new pension rate for un-married daughters of freedom fighters has been enhanced to rupees 1200 per month. Earlier, they were being paid rupees 600 per month.
Previous enhancement in pension was made in October 2006 when the rates were enhanced to rupees 1500 per month for living freedom fighter from Rs 750 per month, for widows from Rs 450 to 900 per month  and for unmarried daughters of the freedom fighters it had been enhanced to Rs 600 from Rs 300.
Meanwhile, a group of beneficiaries while talking to VOS, expressed dissatisfaction over the increase in pension, demanding a major increase in the pension rates to bring it at par with such pension rates in other states.
“This is a joke with us and with our elders who have sacrificed everything for the state’s freedom. An elderly person would require much more for just his medicine these days. What would a girl do with 1200 rupees? It wont even suffice for her pocket money”, the beneficiaries said.
Pertinently, other States have much higher pension atesthan the State of J&K.
The Punjab government recently enhanced monthly pension of freedom fighters and their widows from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 with effect from August 2012, while as government of Tamil Nadu hiked monthly pension of freedom fighters from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000. (VOS)

People will judge us on performance: Omar
Openly challenges PDP leadership to prove mettle
Pulwama, Sept 13 (VOS): Rejecting the claims of the Peoples Democratic Party leadership of forming the next government in the State, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Thursday described it as yet another jingle of PDP. He said that the people will judge parties and leaderships on the basis of their performance.
“Politics of deceit is a handiwork of PDP leadership in order to mislead the people .From this rostrum in Pulwama before the mammoth public gathering I challenge PDP leadership on this count. Their falsehood has got unveiled before masses and they have lost their ground everywhere”, Omar said while addressing a public meeting at Pulwama adding the people would judge the governments and parties on the basis of work done and not on mere slogan raising.
The Chief Minister said that the performance report of PDP during its tenure of government is nothing but a card of failures and shortcomings on all the fronts. He said that the slogans of healing touch, peace with dignity, one government job to every household, etc fell flat on ground as PDP forgot all these and other promises made to people when it was in power.
“History is witness to the opportunism and selfishness exhibited by the PDP leadership time and again to relish power for their personal interest”, he said adding that every resident of the State is aware of the mis-governance that ruled the roast during the tenure when PDP was in power in the State.
“By pointing fingers towards opponents and indulging in misinformation and disinformation campaign, suppressing facts and misreporting events may have helped PDP to deceive people in the past but this tactics cannot work now as the public especially youth force have understood PDP’s this characteristic and double-speak”, he said and added that the hidden pact and closeness between PDP and BJP was revealed when the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee requested Dr. Farooq Abdullah not to dislodge Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s government when a good number of PDP MLAs had then lost faith in Mufti’s leadership and wanted to de-throne him.
“They talk of healing touch, peace with dignity and what not but do nothing on ground. They instead hamper the return of youth from PoK and bring laws like AFSPA”, he said adding that his government is continuously working for revocation of AFSPA. “We have not only reduced the footprints of armed forces, removed bunkers but also brought in rehabilitation policy for return of youth from PoK”.
Reiterating that people will judge the leaderships and the parties on their work done, Omar Abdullah said that it was his government who initiated the process of delinking political issues from economic affairs. “It was me who categorically told the Prime Minister, the UPA Chairperson and other Central leadership at a huge public meeting in South Kashmir that ‘Kashmir issue’ cannot be resolved by economic measures”, he said adding that he made it clear that Kashmir issue is of political nature needing political addressing.
The Chief Minister said that he told the Centre Government that Jammu and Kashmir is thankful for the economic support it receives from the Centre for development programmes but there is need to address internal and external dimensions of Kashmir issue politically and through sustained dialogue process
The Chief Minister said that in order to curb the corruption and ensure time line delivery of public services to the people, his government has enacted and implemented Public Service Guarantee Act which empowers common people to obtain public services from the government departments within the prescribed time frame adding that any laxity or failure on the part of government functionaries in delivery the service within the prescribed time limit makes him liable for fine which will be paid to the affected consumer. “This has brought topsy-turvy in the scenario and now consumer is master of the situation. He is empowered to get compensation out of the fine imposed on the official for not providing service within the fixed time limit”, he explained.
The Chief Minister also referred to the implementation of Right to Information Act, reconciliation of Accountability Commission, Panchayat Election and other initiatives initiated for public empowerment by his government.
Saying that District Pulwama used to be the fortress of support to National Conference, Omar Abdullah asked the party rank and file to redress the grievances of people and rekindle their faith and trust in National Conference.
The public meeting was also addressed by Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, Minister of State for R&B, Javid Ahmad Dar, Members of Parliament, Sharief-ud-Din Shariq, Dr. Mehboob Baig, Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri, Provincial President NC, Ali Mohammad Dar and MLC, Bashir Ahmad Veeri.

Governor inaugurates FICCI-CASCADE Seminar
Calls for launching sustained public campaign against organized crime
Srinagar, Sept 13 (VOS): N. N. Vohra, Governor Jammu and Kashmir, today called for launching a multi-pronged and sustained public campaign to enlarge awareness among the people of J&K about the criminal offences involved in counterfeiting, smuggling and other organized crime which adversely affect the rights and interests of individuals, damage the interests of growers, producers, manufacturers and traders, cause loss of revenue to the public exchequer, and pose a serious threat to the security of the State and the country.
The Governor, as Chief Guest, was inaugurating a Seminar on “Curbing Counterfeiting and Smuggling – An Imperative for Indian Economy”, organized by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)-CASCADE (Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy), here today.
The Governor observed that the huge unlawful funds which accrue from smuggling, fake currency, black money and hawala transactions are utilized by organized crime groups and mafia networks to foster illegal trade in arms and drugs and fund terrorist activities, all of which generate serious security related problems worldwide. He added that Jammu and Kashmir is already faced with serious problems of terrorist networks being funded through the circulation of fake Indian currency.
The Governor congratulated the FICCI-CASCADE and the Kashmir Chambers of Commerce for joining hands to deliberate on such an extremely important problem. He observed that the over 12 million tourists and pilgrims who arrive in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions every year make significant purchases during their visits to the State. And even if a small percentage of the visitors are cheated and sold spurious goods there would be damage to the reputation of the State as the most attractive tourist destination. In this context, he stressed that the producers, manufacturers, traders, shopkeepers and all other stakeholders have to play an important role to ensure that they buy and sell only genuine and not counterfeit goods. He added that, side by side, it is equally important to ensure that all the relevant laws are most strictly enforced against those involved in the manufacture and trade of counterfeit drugs, food items, soft drinks, software, carpets, handicrafts and various other items in violation of Intellectual Property and Trade Mark rights, causing loss of revenue to the exchequer and bringing a bad name to the people and the State. He reiterated that the entire civil society must launch a campaign against spurious drugs and such a movement must be fully supported by the media.
The Governor expressed the hope that the Seminar will culminate with a set of recommendations which would go a long way in curbing counterfeiting, smuggling and other organized crime. He wished successful deliberations to the participants of the Seminar.
Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Minister for Science and Technology and Information Technology, complimented FICCI for organizing in the State a Seminar on a very relevant subject to enlarge awareness among the people against counterfeiting and smuggling. He observed that the counterfeit products not only cause loss to the State exchequer but the consumers also do not get the genuine products. He emphasized the need for trade, industry, commerce, media fraternity, law enforcing agencies and the society at large joining hands to deal with this issue. He thanked the Governor for inaugurating this Seminar.
Deep Chand, Advisor, FICCI-CASCADE, giving global and the country-specific facts and figures vis-à-vis counterfeiting, said that the magnitude of the problem is very serious. While throwing light on the level of counterfeits floating in the market, he said that Asia has emerged as a leading place for manufacturing counterfeit goods. He put forth several suggestions to deal with this problem, which include bringing down to a reasonable level the prices of branded products.
In his welcome address, Hamid Punjabi, President, Kashmir Chambers of Commerce, said that this Seminar is of immense importance as it would help in enlarging awareness among all the stakeholders as how to curb the production and use of counterfeit products. He said that Kashmir handicrafts products have become worst victims of counterfeiting and sought the support of FICCI-CASCADE in this regard.
