“The decision of Omar Sahib in revoking AFSPA is not to take any political mileage out of it” said Tanvir adding “The step is to help people live a better life, a life of peace, dignity, progress, and not against any individual or an institution”

Karra ridicules Govt decision to construct skewed bridge over Jhelum
‘It would be a virtual death trap, Business interests involved’
Srinagar June 03 (VOS): Senior PDP leader and former Minister for Housing and Urban Development Tariq Hameed Karra has slammed what he termed the ‘idiotic’ decision of the government to construct a skewed bridge over river Jhelum near Presentation Convent School Rajbagh.
In a statement issued here today, Karra said it seems that having failed to construct even a culvert during more than half of its tenure, the coalition government is now hell bent upon destroying this historic city by rushing through ill-conceived projects in a hush-hush manner as only around two years are now left for assembly polls.  “The only ulterior motive behind the construction of this skewed bridge at the present location seems to be destructing the splendor of Jhelum bunds restored to its present glory on the initiative of PDP government led by Mufti Muhammad Sayeed,” he said and added otherwise a new bridge could either have been constructed parallel to the existing Abdullah bridge on Emporium Garden side or by replacing Old Zero bridge with a new one, “a plan conceived during his tenure as the Housing Minister.”
He said that a twisted bridge with 180 degree curve in 100 metres distance over the river would be a virtual death trap for the commuters as most of the speedy vehicles trying to crossover this bridge would be God forbid straightway making their way into the river Jhelum. “It would have been advisable for the government to engage a consultant or wait for the completion of Mobility Plan being formulated by RITES for Srinagar before starting work on this deadly overpass,” Karra said and added that the pioneers of this flawed idea should also explain to the people that what would be the use of the existing Abdullah bridge after this new “four-lane” bridge comes up. “Won’t the whole traffic pass through this bridge making the Abdullah bridge redundant?” he asked.
Karra said that there are reports that the bridge is being constructed at its present location on the behest of some politicians who have built guest houses and hotels in Rajbagh area and are now desperate to get the land use of this posh area changed from residential to commercial to run full-fledged hotel business there. “By connecting till-now a serene residential area around the Convent Girls School with the commercial hub of Lal Chowk, it will be easy for these politicians to manage change of the land-use in the Master Plan,” he said and added that this government seems to be more concerned about safeguarding the interests of the contractors, big business houses and brokers instead of doing something for the common masses.
He said the government should immediately stop the construction work before wasting any more money and start exploring alternative sites for the purpose.

Iran is today more powerful than ever: Leader
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the Islamic Republic of Iran is today more powerful than ever before in its history.

“Today, the Iranian nation is by far more powerful compared to the beginning of the revolution in terms of political power and the power to influence global developments,” Ayatollah Khamenei said on Sunday.

The leader added that one of the examples of the progress of the Iranian nation is overcoming all political, military, security and economic challenges that have aimed to destroy the establishment over the past 33 years.

“What the enemies of Iran fear, and must fear, is not a nuclear Iran but the Islamic Iran,” the Leader pointed out.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in the commemoration ceremony of the 23rd anniversary of the passing of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Seyyed Rouhollah Khomeini.

The Leader further pointed to the Western allegations against Iran's nuclear energy program, saying what the world’s political and media circles say about the “danger of a nuclear Iran” are mere lies and deception.

“They magnify the nuclear issue to cover up their own problems. They place the Iranian nuclear issue at the top of their own and the world’s agenda, but this is not the truth of the matter.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said the sanctions that have thus been imposed against the country are pointless, adding, “Sanctions cannot bar the Iranian nation from moving forward.”

“The only effect that these unilateral and multilateral sanctions may have is deepening the Iranian nation's hatred and animosity towards the West," the Leader stressed.

Ayatollah Khamenei further pointed to the Israeli threats of a military strike against Iran over its nuclear energy program, saying the war rhetoric indicates the Zionist regime’s “empty hand, fear and devastation.”

“They (Israelis) know that in these circumstances, they are more vulnerable than ever,” the Leader said.

“Any misstep they might take and any improper move they might commit will come down on themselves like a thunderbolt,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader added the achievements of the Islamic Republic over the past three decades have sent quivers down the spine of arrogant powers.

“The Iranian nation has proven that it can achieve progress independent of the US and even in the face of its animosity. This is a big lesson and that is what they fear,” the Leader said.

The Leader further cautioned against the US plots to create a rift between Shia and Sunni Muslims and said, “Today, the Americans are using Britain’s experience in causing a religious divide among Shia and Sunni Muslims.”

“Undoubtedly, the future will be better than the past for the Muslim nations, Islam and the Iranian nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei concluded
