Morsi winner of Egypt presidential election: electoral commission

After days of delay, the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) has announced the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi as the winner of the county’s presidential runoff.

On Sunday, head of the SPEC Farouq Sultan said that Morsi has received nearly 52 percent of the votes, with over 13 million ballots.

This is while, former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq won over 12 million votes. The voter turnout was 51.85 percent.

Sultan also added that the number of ballots exceeded the number of registered voters which added complications to the vote-counting process.

The election commission says a majority of the appeals by the two candidates have been rejected after discussion.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians have gathered in Cairo and across the country to celebrate the victory of Morsi, chanting slogans such as “God is greatest” and “down with the military rule.”

Also in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Palestinians have taken to the streets in celebration.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has deployed extra security forces in the capital in case of possible unrest following the announcement of the results, warning against any violations of the law.

Morsi is the country’s first freely elected president since the ouster of long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak last year.

Egyptians cast their ballots in a two-day presidential runoff election on June 16 and 17.

Prior to the announcement, both candidates claimed victory with the Muslim Brotherhood announcing that its candidate Mohamed Morsi has won.

However, Shafiq’s campaign said the claim was false, and that more than half of the voters had chosen Mubarak's right-hand man as the next president.

Under a constitutional declaration issued last week, the country’s junta has taken control of the state budget and given itself veto power on a new constitution, making the new president almost powerless. It has also dissolved the parliament dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood.

US unilateral sanctions aganist Iran, violate China sovereignty: Analyst

A US-based analyst says Beijing will never bow to US unilateral sanctions against Iran because in addition to their financial fallout, the Chinese government does not want “to be seen as surrendering to US demands.”

In an article published by the Chinese daily, Global Times, Charles Gray said Washington’s “decision against granting China an exemption from the US sanctions that are set to be put in place against importers of Iranian oil ... [is] nothing less than insane.”

“These sanctions, authorized by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the fiscal year 2012, are targeted at nations that continue to import Iranian oil and have not satisfied the US government that they have taken steps to reduce their importation of that oil,” he added.

The analyst noted that US demand on other countries to stop importing Iran’s oil or face US penalties is “offensive to many nations” because the NDAA “essentially extends US sovereignty to every nation named in it.”

“It is unlikely that the Chinese government wants to be seen as surrendering to these US demands. Such an action would certainly infuriate Chinese public opinion in the short term, and make further diplomatic work with the US more difficult in the long term,” he added.

Gray stated that the US law has been essentially designed to tell Beijing “that it will be the US not China that will determine when and how Chinese financial institutions may spend their currency.”

Otherwise, he added, countries ignoring the US sanctions against Tehran will have to suffer the consequences.

“Besides, the financial consequences of any sanctions [against Beijing] would be devastating for both the US and China. At the very least, it would lead to drastically increased uncertainty in the financial markets. This would be especially true given the probability that China would retaliate against US financial institutions,” he said.

The analyst added that the most extreme result of the US sanctions against Beijing is a general breakdown of commerce between the two nations which may even plunge the whole world into recession or even full-scale depression.

“Iran is not, contrary to US claims, a threat to the world. In fact, US threats against the sovereign rights of China and other nations to conduct their commerce as they see fit poses a greater threat to the stability of the world order. It is [the] US, not Iran, that risks permanently crippling the use of effective multilateral approaches to world issues,” the analyst concluded.

Iran influence in Middle East, warning to enemies: Rezaei

Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council says Tehran’s regional influence is more dangerous than tens of atomic bombs and a warning tone to the enemies of Islam that are constantly hatching plots against the Islamic Republic.

“Iran's influence in the region does not mean deploying its military there. The Islamic Republic has never sought troop deployment to the region,” said Mohsen Rezaei during an open session of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) on Sunday.

If Iran becomes a role model for the regional countries while safeguarding the Islamic, political and economic values, the Western powers will not be capable of confronting Muslim world states, Rezaei added.

The former commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) stated that economic sanctions and political sabotage show the West’s tough stance against Iran.

Rezaei called for taking “a series of measures and firm steps” to confront the Western powers’ bids against Iran and thwart their plots.

He reiterated that the Iranian nation would foil all the enemies’ plots by maintaining its unity and coherence.
