‘GoI trying to change demography of the state’
Srinagar, Aug 26 (VOS): Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani today said there is a plot behind the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the holy Amarnath cave in Kashmir.
“New Delhi is sending more and more yatris to the Amarnath Shrine to boost the morale of Army and scare Kashmiris", the senior separatist leader said while speaking during Eid Milan programme at his Srinagar residence.
"Just a few hundred yatris would come for yatra until 1990s, but this year more than 6 lakh yatris visited the Shri Amarnath shrine. The Supreme Court of India wants to have a road constructed up to the shrine. They want to convey to us that they will not leave Jammu and Kashmir,"”, he said adding all this was done to overawe Kashmriis and spread a sense of insecurity among them.
However, he said, he and his party are not against any religion and are committed to harmony and brotherhood among followers of different faiths.
The octogenarian leader came down heavily on Bhartiya janata Party, castigating them for persecuting Muslims in the Gujarat and other parts of the country.
In an obvious reference to mainstream leaders, Geelani said, “Some people are trying to mislead people by harping about a change, however, after assuming power they leave no stone unturned in persecuting people”.
Referring to slogans raised by certain leaders about economic independence of the state, Geelani said economy was not a solution of the Kashmir issue. “This is a dispute which can only be solved by implementation of United Nations resoutions by allowing people to decide their own future”, he said.
Geelani accused the central intelligence agencies and the Government of India of spreading immorality among the younger generations of Kashmirs. He also alleged the GoI of exploiting the natural resources of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Geelani criticised, what he called the heavy influx of outsider labourers to the Valley and said it was being done on prupose. "One day they would become subjects of the state and all this is being done to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir," he said. (VOS)
