On Eid, Don't Bcame Victum of 'cyber conned'

At first Abdul Rashid and his family could not believe when they heard
that they have won a lottery worth lakhs of rupees in a lucky draw.
Interestingly they had never even entered the lucky draw.

Over a phone call Rashid was asked to deposit Rs.50,000 in an account
and was assured that after processing charges  money worth Rs.25 lakhs
will be deposited in his account.

Minutes after receiving the call from an unknown international phone
number, Rashid hurriedly began to sum up the money while borrowing it
from relatives and friends.

But at the end what happened with Rashid was quite shocking as after
depositing the whole sum, no amount was released in his account and
the phone number also switched off.

Like Rashid there have been several reports from the past few months
when a commoners especially educated youth in the valley are being
duped through internet or mobile SMSes.

These cyber criminals are claiming to be representatives of reputed
international companies who flash messages on cell phones or Emails
accounts of youth in the valley informing them they have been
specially selected by some particular company as winners after draw of
lots of their email accounts or mobile numbers.

“In just two months I have received more than six mails where in a
sender asks me to drop some Rs.5000 in his account number. They mailed
to me that I have won a bumper prize in some contest in which I never
took any part,”  Ayaan Ahmad, told Kashmir Examiner a student of S.P
College.

The prospective winners are then advised to follow certain guidelines
for receding the prize money which include payment of processing fees,
courier charges etc. By this way many persons are being trapped and
deprived off the money

“The sender of mail was asking for my personal information and he also
sent me some internet links to follow. When I clicked on the link,
there were some images of gold and dollars and a text reading that you
have won it in a lucky draw, ”added Ahmad.

More often they use the names of well-known companies, including
Microsoft, Hotmail, MSN etc to gain the trust of a user.

They more often tricks they use to lure a person include-

·       Someone from "Microsoft Tech Support" calls to fix your computer.

·       You have won the Microsoft Lottery.

·       Microsoft "requires credit card information to validate your
copy of Windows.

·       ‘Microsoft’ sends unsolicited email messages with attached
security updates.

It is worth to mention that few months back Jammu and Kashmir Police
have arrested two Nigerian people in this case.

After the incident they have issued an advisory against these prank
calls, emails and SMS and also appealed to the general public not to
fall prey to such hoax calls on mobiles phones.
