Direct Subsidy to Farmers
New Delhi, May 11, 2012.
The Government is considering the feasibility of giving subsidy
directly to farmers. In this regard, a Task Force on direct subsidy in
respect of Kerosene, LPG & Fertilizers has been set up under the
chairmanship of Shri Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI) to examine and recommend a implemental
solution for transfer of subsidy directly to the intended
beneficiaries. The Task Force, has given its Interim Report. In
respect of fertilizers, the Task Force in its interim report has
recommended a three stage approach with respect to payment of subsidy
directly to farmers. Phase-I is to capture the information on
availability of fertilizers at the farm gate level, wherein the
availability at the retailer level will be captured. In Phase-II,
which will be implemented after the Phase-I stabilizes, the subsidy is
expected to be transferred at the last point sale and in Phase-III,
the subsidy is expected to be transferred directly to the intended
beneficiary based on AADHAR Numbers. The fertilizer subsidy is
transferred to the farmer (including the marginal and small farmers)
by way of a heavily subsidized MRP. As on date, a farmer pays only
approximately 50% of the cost of fertilizer as MRP.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Chemicals and
Fertilisers, Shri Srikant Kumar Jena in a written reply in the Rajya
Sabha today. [PIB]

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reiterated that the Islamic Republic will not retreat an iota from its rights under pressure or sanctions.
“Today, we see that there are some around the world who raise hue and cry, put pressure and ratify resolutions one after another [against Iran]. All these attempts are aimed at impeding the Iranian nation’s progress and undermining its dignity,” Ahmadinejad said in the northeastern city of Torbat-e Jam on Thursday.
“They should know that this nation will not retreat even an iota from its inalienable rights,” the president added, recommending Western powers to treat nations according to international law, justice, friendship and respect.
The Iranian chief executive also emphasized that the era of bullying has come to an end, noting that “it is to the benefit of the ill-wishers of the Iranian people to return to justice, and they should know that this nation has made all its enemies regret throughout history.”
His comments come against a backdrop of Western-led allegations and sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear energy program. The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear activities.
The US and EU have recently imposed tough financial and oil sanctions against Iran in a bid to pile up pressure on the country.
Iran has repeatedly dismissed allegations over its nuclear energy activities, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Heavy bomb explosion hits eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad
A powerful bomb explosion has rocked Jalalabad Airport in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, Press TVreports.
The incident occurred on Friday when a bomb planted in a fuel tanker detonated at the entrance of the airport, according to Afghan officials.
Jalalabad Airport, which is located five kilometers (three miles) southeast of Jalalabad, is currently used only for military purposes and is seen as the second largest US airbase in Afghanistan.
The explosion, apparently aimed at the US military personnel at the airport, exploded prematurely when the driver of tanker was waiting to be checked in.
The officials said there were no casualties in the bomb explosion and that the driver escaped the scene following the blast.
A NATO statement released earlier in the day said a man in an Afghan army uniform had opened fire on US-led foreign forces in eastern Afghanistan and killed one soldier.
The incident, which Afghan sources said took place in Kunar Province, came one day after three US soldiers were wounded in a rocket attack in the province of Logar, also in the east.
The growing death toll in Afghanistan has intensified opposition in the United States and other NATO member states against the protracted military presence and undermined public support for the US-led war in the country.

An Azeri physician speaking on condition of anonymity told the Azeri daily Gundelik, that such food items as cooking oil, rice, sugar and tea which are imported from Israel can cause infertility in men.
He added that the problem has been confirmed by doctors testing the foods at Baku’s medical university.
According to the report, the head of the press department of the Medical University of Azerbaijan Mubariz Allahverdiyev has not yet commented on the news.
