Curfew to continue in old city areas on Tuesday
Srinagar, Dec 3 (VOS): Various city areas Monday remained under curfew for the sixth consecutive day as a precautionary measure in view of apprehension of clashes between two groups in the old city.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police, Hazratbal, Abdul Qayoom told VOS that curfew will continue in Zadibal and Nowhatta police station areas and Urdu Bazaar police post area on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
He said the decision to continue curfew has been taken to prevent clashes and any possible loss of life or property.
The officer said the police were continuously monitoring the situation and that elders from both the communities have been engaged to diffuse any possibility of tension or clashes. He said the people behind the clashes were being identified. (VOS)


Separatists concerned over lifers to youth
Frame joint programme to fight life imprisonment sentences against Kashmiris: Shah
Srinagar, Dec 03 (VOS): Asking separatist leadership to frame a joint programme to protest against the life imprisonment sentences being awarded to Kashmiri youth, Chairman Democratic Freedom Party Shabir Ahmad Shah has said that Dr. Qasim Faktoo and various other Kashmiri youth have been denied justice by such sentences.
According to a statement issued here, he said that the state courts have failed to deliver justice to the youth of Kashmir. “Separatists should frame a joint programme to save the lives of Kashmiri youth and fight against this injustice”.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar has condemned the sentence against Nazir Ahmad Shiekh and Showkat Ahmad Khan awarded by a Jammu TADA Court on Monday. “These youth are political prisoners while as some are war prisoners and there is no reason to award them such sentences”, Akbar said adding “Courts are adopting dual policies and are playing with the lives of youth”.
JKLF (H) Chairman Javaid Ahmad Mir and Chairman Democratic Liberation Front Hashim Qureshi have also expressed anger and anguish against the sentence. Mir has extended support to the Kashmir Bandh call given by JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik. (VOS)
 CM gives away prizes
Kashmir University lifts trophy
JAMMU, DECEMBER 03 – Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah this afternoon gave away prizes at the conclusion of All India Vice Chancellor’s T20 Cricket Cup finale played between Universities of Kashmir and Jammu, here.
The Kashmir University lifted the trophy by beating Jammu University in a thrilling match by 6 wickets. The Kashmir University achieved the victory in 19th over surpassing the targets of 118 runs put by Jammu University.
Omar Abdullah also gave individuals prizes to the players of both the teams. He presented winner’s trophy to the captain of Kashmir University and runners up trophy to the captain of Jammu University.
The Vice Chancellor Jammu University, Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Additional Director General of Police, K. Rajindra and various other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Power Shutdown on December 06
            SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 03: According to Power Controller, Power Development Department, Kashmir, in order to replace worn out top tiers in 132 KV and 33 KV outdoor yards of Grid Station Sheeri, power shutdown of 50 MVA Grid Station Sheeri along with Pattan-Sheeri-LJHP Circuit 132 KV LITL shall be affected on December 06, 2012 from 09 p.m. to 05 p.m.
            During the shutdown there shall be no power supply available from Grid Station Sheeri.

Election Observer visits polling booths
            SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 03: Election Observer for the conduct of Legislative Council Elections for the two seats from Panchayat quota, Mr. Shantmanu today visited various polling booths in Kashmir division, to ensure smooth and fair elections.
            Among other polling stations, the Observer visited Polling stations at B.K. Pora, Narbal in Budgam district, Pampore in Pulwama district, Pattan and Singhpora in Baramulla district besides Wakoora in Ganderbal and Sumbal in Bandipora districts.

Chib inspects arrangements for Tour De International Cycling Race at RS Golf Course
            SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 03: Minister for Youth Services and Sports, R.S. Chib this evening visited Royal Spring Golf Course (RSGC) Srinagar and took stock of arrangements made for conduct of Tour De International Cycling Race being held tomorrow.
            The Minister was accompanied by Commissioner Secretary, Sports, Bipul Pathak, Secretary Sports Council, Mr. Thussu, Joint Director Information, B.A. Wani and other officers of allied departments.
            Earlier, Mr. Chib attended winter secretariat where several deputations called on the Minister and apprised him about various problems confronting them. Mr. Chib listened patiently to the woes of people and assured of all possible attention in solving their problems.

Specially abled children to be rehabilitated at grass root level: Bhat
                SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 03: In connection with weeklong programme for specially abled persons, World Disability Day was observed at Composite Regional Centre at Bemina here today.
            Director Social Welfare, Mr. Bashir Ahmad Bhat who was the chief guest on the occasion highlighted the role of Anganwari workers and helpers for rendering their services in the upbringing of specially abled children in the valley. He also discussed various schemes being initiated for the upliftment of physically challenged persons besides organising community based rehabilitation programmes and initiation of survey programmes in the Composite Rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
            Mr. Bhat also emphasised that differently abled people have to live with dignity by getting proper rehabilitation and education with a view to rehabilitate them at gross root level.
